The Galactic Cosmic Ray Electron + Positron Spectrum from 7 GeV to 1 TeV Measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope
Abstract
The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), launched into a low Earth orbit on June 11, 2008, has proven not only to be a successful gamma-ray observatory but also a Cosmic Ray electron + positron (CRE) detector. Following the measurement of the first systematics limited Galactic CRE spectrum from 20 GeV to 1 TeV, the Fermi collaboration has taken on the goal of extending this spectrum down to lower energies. Given its orbit and the fact that the CRE flux below 20 GeV is affected by the geomagnetic field, the lowest energy that the Fermi LAT can access the CRE of galactic origin is 6 GeV. In this talk we will present the analysis behind the measurement of the Galactic CRE spectrum from 7 GeV to 1 TeV with one year of statistics with the Fermi LAT.
